THE APPELLATIONS OF CALIFORNIA WINE
Santa Barbara

The Santa Barbara wine growing region is located above Los Angeles on the central California coast and is served by Los Angeles International Airport with a regional airport in Santa Barbara. Find a good showing of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and some crisply textured Sauvignon and Riesling.

In Santa Barbara County, the north-south coastal range of mountains abruptly turns to run almost east-west for 50 miles, framing the valleys in a unique transit to the Pacific Ocean. This is the only stretch of land from Alaska to Cape Horn constituting an east-west traverse. The unique topography allows the flow of fog and ocean breezes to shape distinct microclimates and makes the region one of the coolest viticultural areas in California. However, warmer daytime temperatures in the inland areas allow a wide variety of winegrapes to be grown. Terrain and climates vary widely, from steep, wind-swept hillsides to rolling inland valley vineyards where summer temperatures often reach the century mark.

Located at the gateway to Santa Barbara Wine Country, the Santa Maria Valley is the northern most AVA of Santa Barbara County. We understand and celebrate the importance of terroir as a sense of place. Our unique soil and the maritime influence in this region, which is becoming renowned for its cool climate and ideal growing conditions, are perfect for producing coveted Pinot Noirs, Chardonnays, and other varietals of great merit.

With the addition of new tasting rooms, including Addamo Estate Vineyards, Kenneth Volk Vineyards, Costa De Oro Winery and Gold Coast Market Place, and most recently Riverbench Vineyard and Tres Hermanas Winery, the Santa Maria Valley Wine Country Trail now boasts eleven thriving tasting rooms. This esteemed coastal appellation has grown steadily, albeit slowly, over the years. The pace of growth is intentional; the winegrowing community of Santa Maria Valley is protective of its history, character and potential.
